Foodie Friday: Best Summer Wines Under $15
Anyone that knows me knows I love a bold, dry, velvety red wine. Nothing pleases me more than to prop up my feet by the fire with a glass of Malbec or Rioja. But in the summertime in Tennessee I have no desire to sit by the fire. No, most of my weekend days and evenings are spent by the pool or on the lake and big glass of bold red wine just doesn’t quite fit. So what to drink? Here is a short list of my favorite and, in my opinion, the best summer wines - all $15.00 or under!
Rosé
I love reds so when I drink a cool Rosé that has been produced with my favorite red wine grapes (Pinot Noir, Grenache and Rioja), then I feel that they were made just for me! Rosé is one of the easiest wines to pair with food as it will go with so, so much. Try a wide variety of tapas when drinking this fruity spirit. My top Rosé picks:
Pinot Grigio ( and Pinot Gris)
Same grape, different name. I love a crisp cold Pinot G on a hot day. Many have citrus notes which are perfect for a summertime afternoon. Try with a tray of oysters on the half shell and poached shrimp.
Vinho Verde
A lesser known white, Vinho Verde, is from Portugal and they are light, inexpensive and fun to drink due to the effervescent nature of the wine. Tiny bubbles in a crisp white make for a very refreshing wine that goes great with spicy foods such as Paella.
Gruner Vetliner
I only recently discovered this wine. Grüner Veltliner is a dry, white wine that grows almost only in Austria. It is tangy with hints of lime and orange zest. Serve with rich meats such as Weiner Schnitzel.
What are some of your favorite summertime wines?
Cheers!

6 Must-Have Items for Your Camping Bag
Our family camps several times a year, and yet, I never seem to get the packing QUITE right!
If it’s hot, I’ve always brought a ton of sweatshirts. If cold, I forgot the extra blankets. Sweating, freezing, they’re just part of camping life! Somewhere in all of this, we manage to get out and enjoy the outdoors.
And… I’ve learned when it comes to my own personal comforts, it pays to pack well, but light!
6 Must-Have Items for Your Camping Bag
- Coffee Mug. Trust me on this - no matter if you’re a tea drinker, soda drinker, whatever the beverage… you’ll want a covered mug to keep your beverage from getting bugs, pine needles, or ash floating around.
- Bug Spray. You’ll never see them in an ad for camping gear, but those little guys are out there in droves. Drive them away with some bug spray, and keep your own bottle handy all the time!
- A journal. Even if you’re not a writer typically, the Great Outdoors often inspires a little creativity in most of us. Write some thoughts, sketch some leaves or birds, or just make a list of what to bring “next time!”
- External Battery Charger. You do NOT, I repeat, do NOT want to use your car excessively to charge your devices. You may never leave if you end up draining your car battery! So pack a fully charged external battery charger and everyone will be happy. Until that runs out of course!
- A hat. Yes, this is for those bugs again! Ticks are often not deterred by typical bug spray, so keep your head covered as much as possible. Plus, then you don’t need to do your hair all week!
- A bandana. This covers a multitude of uses, from wiping off damp chairs in the mornings, to covering your head, to covering your face from campfire smoke (which will always be blowing in your direction! So, better bring two!
I’m sure there’s a few other items you’ll want to bring personally, like sunglasses, music, reading material, but there are essential camping items that I’ll be packing this summer! Oh, and if you are bringing baby’s along, you’ll want to also check out the Baby’s Camping Survival Guide!
What would you never leave behind on a camping trip?

Behind the Scenes at Maggie Bags: Annual Staff Picnic
Each July, Maggie Bags’ President, Steve Dew, hosts all the staff of Maggie Bags, BEDNET and Tennessee Webbing for the annual staff picnic. The setting again this year was Steve’s parents’ property (Adrian, Steve’s father, is the parent company’s namesake) which includes a spring-fed pond stocked with bass, catfish and blue gill. This beautiful property sits well off the road on a gravel path and feels wonderfully isolated yet cozy. All the staff and their families are invited and everyone brings a dish to share.
Unlike last year, this year was a little hotter so the kids really enjoyed getting in the pond to swim. Several folks took the paddle boat out for a spin too. We enjoyed hamburgers, hot dogs and brats along with pasta salad, baked beans, slaw and tons of desserts. For us, it’s a wonderful time of sharing food, friendships and family with those we work with everyday. We wanted to take you behind the scenes to share our pictures from this year’s picnic with you. Enjoy!
