The bag could not have arrived at a better time. My family was headed out of town for a 10 day venture to Florida and I was excited to take my Maggie Bags Campus Tote with me. Switching out my usual handbag for this handy tote proved to be a wise choice. My Maggie Bag went with us everywhere, including the Magic Kingdom (Pictured below).

Behind the Scenes at Maggie Bags: Meet Morgan!

Pinterest

Morgan Hardy, pictured here with her favorite Maggie Bag, the Campus Tote in ultraviolet.

We want to introduce you to our newest staff member, Morgan Hardy. Morgan is interning with us this summer as a design assistant to our creative director and senior designer, Callie Konane. She will be graduating from the University of Tennessee soon with a theater degree.

Morgan was born near Chicago then moved to Chattanooga as a teenager. She came to Knoxville to attend UT a few years ago. She also works part-time at Earthfare in the wellness department. She has always been interested in the design process and has enjoyed the costume design construction classes she’s taken so far. Her mom, a seamstress, gave her a sewing machine as a high school graduation present. Learning on her own and from her mom, she began sewing and the rest, as they say, is history.

Morgan says “I’ve always wanted to be a designer. The one dream that’s stood the test of time was designing.”

Help us welcome Morgan!

Friday Pinterest Round Up: Top 4 Pins This Week

Pinterest

TGIF! It’s time again for the Friday Pinterest Round Up! Here are the top 4 pins that were repinned from us this week.

  1. Artsy Potting Table - If you click through this pin you’ll see how to make it using an old door and salvaged wood.
  2. 15 Shade Tolerant Vegetables - This graphic shows which veggies can grown in the shade. This pin comes from a pretty neat gardening blog, and another post says “If you grow it for the fruit or the root you’ll need full sun. If you grow it for the leaves or the stems or the sprouts partial shade is all you need.”
  3. PVC Garden Tool Holders - A creative and clever way to store those unwieldy tools in your shed or garage!
  4. Vegan Chocolate Cranberry Zucchini Bread - This looks like an absolutely delicious vegan dish! I’ll definitely be trying this one.

Which were your favorite pins this week?

Recipe: Sweet & Tangy Barbecue Sauce

Pinterest

Recipe: Sweet & Tangy Barbeque Sauce | Maggie Bags

When I was growing up my mom had one meal that she considered a big treat… barbecued ribs with corn-on-the-cob. She loves it so much that she perfected her own barbecue sauce recipe. It’s very simple and adds a sweet yet tangy flavor to your favorite dishes. Mom loves it on pork ribs, of course. I always loved mixing it with corn. My husband likes it on chicken. My son is content to dip his finger right in the pan. It truly is a versatile sauce everyone will love!

Gather Your Supplies

  • Medium Saucepan
  • Spoon

Gather Your Ingredients

  • 1 Pkg Onion Soup Mix
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 1/2 cup Vinegar
  • 1/2 cup Butter
  • 1/4 cup Sugar
  • 2 Tbls Dry Mustard
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Pepper
  • 1 cup Ketchup

Step One: Set ketchup aside and add all the remaining ingredients to a medium saucepan.

Step Two: Cook mixture on medium-high until it begins to boils.

Step Three: Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step Four: Remove from heat and stir in ketchup until well blended.

Step Five: Slather on your favorite food destined for sweet tanginess.

Quick Note: Though the sauce will work in almost every way you would typically use barbecue sauces, such as grilling or baking, I do not recommend this sauce for crockpot/ slow cooker cooking. It tends to break down and the vinegar overpowers the other flavors.

~Tonya – Tyrneathem

Tonya is a stay-at-home mom to a precocious two-year-old son that takes every opportunity to steal the spotlight. She’s wife to her romantic knight in mostly-shining armor. They live in Wisconsin in a house ruled by their two crazy cats. Perhaps naming them after goddesses was a bad idea. The family’s obsession with dragons inspired the name of Tonya’s blog… Tyrneathem means “Children of the Dragons.” The cast of characters above are woven through her posts about life, crafts, and whatever else pops into her head.

10 Carefree Flowers for the Lazy Gardener

Pinterest

When I first bought my house several years ago, I was excited to see which flowers would come up that first spring. To my disappointment the only thing that came up were two tulips. I started buying flowers - snapdragons, pansies and petunias to start. One day while at my mother-in-law’s, I asked her how she kept up such beautiful flower beds. They were overflowing with flowers and the first time I saw her backyard I even commented that it looked like the Garden of Eden (or what I imagine that must have looked like.) Her secret? Carefree flowers.

Carefree flowers are the kind that don’t need a ton of attention - which is a good thing because I’m too busy to be messing with flowers everyday! I truly am a “lazy gardener.” These come back every year (although not all perennials, some reseed themselves to come back) and even multiply from year to year. She was more than willing to share these with me since she would clear out her beds about once a season. After planting these two years ago and seeing them through two winters, I wanted to share with you these low-maintenance flower ideas.

  1. Sedum - This is a succulent that flowers and requires literally no care at all. On the laziness scale, it ranks as the easiest. Because it’s a succulent, it rarely needs watering. You can actually pick a leaf off this plant, stick it in the ground somewhere else, and it will grow a new plant. The sedum in the picture above started as a leaf from another plant. Blooms go from white to pink.
  2. Dianthus - These low height flowers typically come in bright pink, white or a light pink/bright pink combo. They need watering but not everyday. Once they bloom you can cut the dead blooms off and they will continue to bloom from spring to late summer in most climates.
  3. Lavender - This flowering herb is not only fragrant when it’s blooming, but the blooms retain their fragrance even when dried. After the first bloom you can make this much bushier by cutting off the dead blooms. These multiply well too.
  4. Big Bee Balm - This super-tall flower reseeds itself and multiplies each year. My big bee balm is about 3.5′ tall! It’s drought tolerant and attracts hummingbirds as well.
  5. Buddleia - Commonly known as a Butterfly Bush, this gorgeous plant attracts tons of butterflies to our yard. The blooms are typically purple, white or a dark purplish pink. They don’t require a lot of water in the summertime unless you get less than 1″ of rain per week. They can get quite large, however, so be sure you plant this where it has room to grow.
  6. Coreopsis - Sometimes called tickseed, the daisy-like flower is easy to grow and maintain. It multiplies well too.
  7. Grape Hyacinths - These miniature flowers are perfect for a small bouquet or vase. They are some of the first to bloom in the spring. Watch out though as they can be invasive by reseeding themselves.
  8. Cannas - With their veined leaves and tropical, flamboyant flowers, these are some of my favorites. Ours have doubled since planting them last year. You can cut off dead blooms to promote re-blooming.
  9. Little Bee Balm - Only little when compared to it’s big sister, this flower reseeds itself and multiplies each year. The purple blooms are absolutely gorgeous!
  10. Phlox - Coming in many varieties and growing 2-4′ tall, this is sure to catch the attention of anyone entering your garden. It’s large pillowy blooms attract hummingbirds and butterflies. You may need to divide it after 1-2 years of growth.

Always follow the instructions on where to plant, sunlight, and watering needs whenever you purchase a plant. What flowers do you find the easiest to care for? Which are your favorites from the ones listed above?

Maggie Bags Behind the Scenes: Staff Luncheon

Pinterest

With three brands under one roof, getting together and catching up with each other is a must. A few days ago the staff of Adrian’s Inc., parent company of the brands Maggie Bags, BEDNET, and Tennessee Webbing, got together for a summertime luncheon behind the office. The day was windy and a little cloudy at times, but that helped offset the heat.

L to R: Julie Stover, Penny Scott, Amanda Cox

First things first…time to eat! The lunch was catered by East Tennessee favorite Buddy’s BBQ. Our fearless leader, Steve Dew (pictured below), welcomed everyone and said a few words about how important it is for the staff of all three companies to come together and touch base. He also commended the strides the three businesses have made over the past year.

Next each department gave updates on the latest news from their neck of the woods. Julie Stover, National Sales Manager for Maggie Bags, was greeted with enthusiasm when she invited everyone to work out with her every Tuesday and Thursday during the lunch hour. Next, there were updates from Danny Cox with Tennessee Webbing and Greg Hill with BEDNET. We also heard from Kerri Karel, Maggie Bags Senior Marketing Director, and Callie Konane, Maggie Bags Senior Designer and Creative Director about what’s coming next for Maggie Bags. Rounding out these quick briefs was Phillip Cook, our Warehouse Manager.

We also said goodbye to our Director of Operations, Laura Nase. Laura began with us as a consultant then came on board full time in November of 2011. In her time here she worked to streamline processes and handle daily operations. She will be missed but we wish her well on the next chapter of her life.

Laura Nase, Director of Operations

Last but certainly not least, COO Amanda Cox talked about our continued commitment to recycling, green solutions and repurposing. To this end she reminded everyone about our in-house recycling program and made sure everyone was aware of what types of things to recycle. Amanda said “All three of these sister companies were founded on the idea of not letting something go to waste. It’s important that we practice what we preach, and I know that our employees are more than willing to do their part for the environment.”

All in all the day was one of sharing, laughing, and camaraderie. Next up? The staff picnic on July 12!
