Behind the Scenes at Maggie Bags: Office Christmas Party

Last Thursday the Maggie Bags office celebrated our annual holiday party. As is our tradition, we played the infamous “white elephant” gift game. Our President, Steve Dew, decided that instead of each of us spending money to bring a gift, he would provide all of the gifts for the game. How nice!!

Gifts included gift cards to restaurants, grocery stores and cash, along with several small kitchen appliance items. Everyone had a blast! From our family to yours, Merry Christmas!

Second Harvest Success

Dear Fans and Customers of Maggie Bags,

We had this creative idea to give back in our own community this Holiday Season. All you had to do was enter to win a (much sought after) Dark Red Cicily Tote. We said we would donate $1.00 to Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee for every entry (up to 2000 entries).

You did not disappoint! Not only did you enter but you encouraged your friends to enter. We had 3,117 total entries.

Since you stepped up, we stepped up - We matched the total entries dollar for dollar. That is $3,117.00 dollars donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee.

But wait - there is more! Laura Owens, our Online Marketing Coordinator found out about “double your donation day“. She called in and made our pledge to double the amount of families the donation can help feed in East Tennessee. The Maggie Bags cash donation is $3,117.00. This will be doubled based on our pledge for a total of $6,234.00.

18,702 meals - €œSecond Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee can provide three meals for every $1. So the Maggie Bags cash donation along with the double your donation pledge will supply 18,702 meals.

We were overwhelmed by the outpouring of support! Here are just some of the comments from the original blog post:

I’m helping because I’ve had to go to food banks, I’ve seen empty shelves. I can’t contribute financially, so here goes.

I’m one of those people that need the help of food banks… Between doctors and prescriptions there is not much left for food. We have cut back to only two meals a day sometimes one meal a day when it nears the end of the month. Our income has been cut in half from what it was when we were both working…If someone one asked me 15 years ago what my life would be like today, I would have never had guessed it would be like it is. I know we are not the only ones out there. And the problem is growing bigger everyday. Thank your company for caring.

I love Maggie Bags and trust their products so I definitely trust in a charity event that involves Maggie Bags. I get to be a part of a great charity event and maybe win a Maggie Bag myself, either way it’s a win win and I enjoy entering.

Donating a $1 is so simple and easy! I’m donating to teach my children the reason behind the holiday season€¦ giving!

What can you do in your own community? We have you done or can you do to give back your own community. We would love to hear your stories. Please post a comment and share with us!

Warm Wishes €œfrom the Maggie Bags family to yours we wish you a safe, green and very Happy Holiday.

-Kerri Karel

p.s. The drawing winner is Brooke K. from Tennessee! She was so excited to not only win the Cicily Tote but to be part of such a worthwhile campaign.

p.p.s. Maggie Bags reached out to several bloggers we have partnered with in that past and they were so helpful in spreading the word about this giveaway and helping us surpass our goal! Granny’s Perfect Ginger Snaps

We called my great-grandmother Granny. She died when I was very young but I remember her as being a strong woman who loved the most intense and arduous forms of cooking and sewing. She was born in West Tennessee in a very rural area. She survived breast cancer (double mastectomy), uterine cancer, and helped form a women’s civic club to help rural women further their education and understanding of community, social and world issues.

Every year at Christmas, Granny made these ginger snaps, which she called ginger “cakes”. I remember eating these when we visited my grandmother’s house (which is where my granny lived) and I always looked forward to the tangy, crisp taste of them. Here’s the original recipe, in my great-grandmother’s writing:

My mom and I now make these together and it’s something I look forward to each year. I went to her house last weekend to make up this year’s cookies and couldn’t resist sharing the recipe and back-story with you.

Ingredients

1.5 c. heavy cream

2.5 c. brown sugar

1.25 c. dark molasses (Granny always used Brer Rabbit Molasses)

2 tbs dried ginger powder

2 tbs lemon zest

2 tbs soda

9 c. flour

Directions

1.     Whip cream into stiff peaks. Add sugar, molasses, ginger, zest, and soda and mix well.

2.     Add flour and mix thoroughly, until dough is completely dark brown. (If dough is sticky or will not roll out, wrap tightly and refrigerate several hours or overnight.)

3.     Working w/small portions of dough at a time, roll out very thin (use a floured pastry cloth and pin cover). Cut cookies and place on a greased sheet (I use parchment).

4.     Dip your fingers in a bowl of water or use a pastry brush and use to brush water on the tops of the cookies.

5.     Bake at 375 for 8-10 minutes until lightly browned. It’s hard to tell when they are done, and they burn in a flash so be sure to keep an eye on them. They should be pliable when hot, then cool to crispness. Makes a zillion. Dough is good to eat, and that reduces the amount you have to roll out :-)

P.S. Since the dough does make so much, it’s easy to refrigerate until you’re ready to make another batch and the dough will keep in the fridge for several weeks. You can place small batches of dough between parchment paper and put into a plastic zip bag for storage in the fridge.

Guess What’s in My Maggie Bag Today?

Christmas came a little early to the Maggie Bags office! Last weekend my husband and I canned apple cider butter and apple pie in a jar. I brought these to work in my Tote of Many Colors and it was perfect for carrying something so heavy.

What types of things do you can? Do you think canning is becoming a lost art?

DIY: Snow Globes

Snow globes bring such wonder and sparkle to our Holidays I wonder why we don’t make them for every season, oh wait its the snow part isn’t it? Let’s start calling them Glitter Globes then we can have them out all the time! I tried making snow globe ornaments last year and needless to say they were gorgeous, but much to heavy for my little Charlie Brown Christmas tree. After making this Snow Glob your home or office will surely we filled with joy and maybe even rainbows like mine. (I think its the holographic glitter that creates this effect.)

Here’s what you will need:

  • Jar
  • Vegetable Glycerine
  • Glitter
  • Distilled Water
  • Super Glue
  • Figurines
  • Tiny Mirror Ball
  • Circular Mirror
  • Star Sequins

The last three on the list are where my creativity took me. Allow yourself to get inspired and experiment. I’m a firm believer that we are all perfectly different and I think our crafting should also reflect that. The circle mirror ground makes we wish I had ice skater figurines or swans! How pretty would that be!

I started with all the gluing: star sequins to the tops of my little trees, the circle mirror to the lid, and lastly the trees to the mirror. Don’t be afraid to use ample amounts of super glue to get the trees or your figurines stuck where you want them, I didn’t use enough glue the first time and one of my trees became a floater. Super glue does set quick so get them where you want them quick. Try to avoid the inevitable stuck finger situation as best you can. And remember to get as creative and customized as you want.

Next, add your distilled water and a tablespoon of vegetable glycerine. Leave enough room for your figurines so that water is not displaced when you add the lid.

Now for the sparkles! You really don’t need much glitter, but if you’re like me you’ll just want it to be as sparkly as possible. Drop in the mini mirror ball because why shouldn’t there be a dance party in the middle of a snow storm? This will also lend to extra light refractions if you set it in a window or near a light. The ball will float because it has a buoyant center.

One last step before we screw on the lid band, and that is to outline the lid with super glue so there are no leaks. I am wishing I skipped this step the first time until I knew all of my trees had enough glue on them. Maybe you will want to screw your lid on and turn it upside down to make sure everything is secure before adding this final seal. If you are confident you have used enough glue with your figurines then go ahead and outline your lid with glue and quickly cap your jar and screw on the lid band.

GLITTER DONE! What crafty items are you making this holiday season?

Energy Saving Tips

The dreaded heating bills will soon be arriving in many mailboxes. With winter upon us we often turn the heat up and with that; more energy is used and more money is taken out of our budgets. When our wallets are affected we often look for ways to save money and when it comes to saving energy we can be green, too!

Saving energy really is a simple goal to achieve within your home or even in the workplace. There are many small things you can do that will become habit and will really make a difference in that bill! Small, simple changes really do make a difference, you’ll see!

Here are just a few of the easiest things to do:

·       Unplug electronics when not in use; believe it or not, they are still using power!

·       Change to LED light bulbs in your home to save energy and get rid of nasty chemicals.

·       Make sure your water heater is set to no higher than 125 degrees.

·       Turn off your computer(s) at night and use the sleep mode when you step away from your desk €“ this will help save a tremendous amount of energy (up to 85% each day!)

·       Open curtains and use natural lighting during daylight hours, even move your desk or work space close to the window. Close your curtain/blinds at night to keep the heat in.

·       When you do use lights in the house, be sure to turn them off when you leave the room

·       Turn off the TV and/or video games and do art projects or cook with the kids.

·       If you are gone all day at work, turn the thermostat down while you are away; if you are home most of the day keep the thermostat 1-3 degrees below where you normally would and take advantage of slippers, sweaters and blankets.

·       Install DIY plastic-film storm windows from your local hardware store.

·       Smaller, unused rooms can be sealed off by closing the floor or wall registers and keeping the door closed.

Things that may take a bit more work, but are worth the effort:

·       Install a water heater blanket if your water heater is more than five years old.

·       Insulate the pipes around the water heater with inexpensive, easy-to-install pipe insulation.

·       Weatherstrip and caulk windows and exterior doors; check window frames for cracks and fill them in with caulk.

Special Tips for Holiday Decorations:

·       Purchase a timer and set it for your outside holiday lights to be on no longer than six hours per day.

·       Use LED lights for outdoor décor; older holiday lights can use up to 99% MORE energy than LED light strings.

Simple steps help us save money and be more aware of our energy consumption. The long terms effects shine bright on our budgets and on our planet! Take a few minutes out of your day to make these changes; they’ll easily become habit and you’ll love the results!

Recipe: Butterscotch Chocolate Chip Blondies

This delicious recipe is super-easy to make! My husband absolutely loves these and said that I should add them to my regular repertoire. I don’t know about that, since I rarely make sweets, but it freezes well and could be made ahead of time. I like to freeze in portion sizes so that I don’t have a big pan of blondies staring at me for days.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup (1-1/2 sticks) butter or margarine
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2  eggs + 1 egg white
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1-3/4 cups (11-oz. pkg.) butterscotch chips
  • 1 cup semi-sweet mini chocolate chips (about half a bag)
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Directions

1.    Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease 13x9x2-inch baking pan.

2.    Beat butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar in large bowl until creamy. Add eggs; beat well. Stir together flour, baking soda and salt; gradually add this to butter mixture, beating until well blended.

3.    Stir in butterscotch chips, chocolate chips and nuts, if desired. Spread in prepared pan.

4.    Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until top is golden brown and center is set. Cool completely in pan on wire rack. Cut into bars. Makes 24 to 36 bars.

Blondies are a great dessert a little off the common brownie path. So which do you like better, blondies or brownies?
