Tips for Reducing Sugar at Holiday Gatherings
It’s the most *sugary* time of the year!
Yes, this is the season for sweets, which I love, but… even my toddler is starting to understand that some foods simply aren’t good for us. He asks me often, “Mommy, does this have sugar?” Honestly, it’s a great question, because sometimes I have to do a double-take and check the ingredients.
Often I’m shocked! Foods I once thought were “healthy,” turn out to be packed with added sugars! Baby and toddler yogurts, for instance. Very high in sugar.
So as we head into the holiday season, in addition to doing a 5-6 day family cleanse diet (nothing radical, just a week of “clean eating”!), I also have some tips and tricks for reducing sugar intake during the holidays.
Go halfsies. Instead of your usual two spoons of sugar, just add one spoon. You will get used to the reduced sweetness in a few days.
Switch your sweetener. Some sweeteners are better than others. While it’s important to track your overall sugar intake, some natural sweeteners have a lower glycemic index, making them easier for your body to process out. Try switching your white sugar for coconut sugar, maple sugar, honey, or stevia sweeteners. The coconut and maple sugars especially have little to no taste alteration when used in coffee or baking.
Play a little mind trick. I changed my sugar spoon out - instead of using a regular teaspoon (like I’d use for cereal), I started using a “sugar spoon” which holds a bit less than a teaspoon. If your brain is used to the habit of two spoonfuls of sugar, you’ll still go through those motions, but you’ll be getting a smidge less with each spoonful! It’s the small things.
Make it yourself. If you must use sugar for a dessert or treat, baking from scratch will likely mean a dessert with less sugar than store-bought (and probably fewer preservatives, dyes, and other yucky stuff!). It definitely depends on what you’re baking, but homemade goodies allow you to control the sugar! (Psst, even dinner items like tomato sauces often have hidden sugars! Watch OUT!).
Reward yourself… just with something else! Instead of going for that sugar-laden mocha after a long day shopping with the kids (!), how about a new nail polish, cute accessories, or a fun magazine to read! Too often our society has trained us to reward ourselves with food, but there’s so many other inexpensive ways to “treat” ourselves.
It’s definitely hard to reduce sugar intake all at once, so above all, I’d recommend a slow-but-sure approach. Baby steps towards healthier snacking is better than going cold turkey only to give in and overdo the sweets.
Here’s to a healthy holiday!

SoHo Satchel Giveaway: Crunchy Beach Mama [Ends 12/9/13]
It’s our first-ever review and giveaway of the new SoHo Satchel! As you know we already partner with Courtney from Crunchy Beach Mama as a guest blogger. Well we sent her one of our new satchels to see what she thought. Here’s an excerpt from her review:
This is the SoHo Satchel in small. Though it really is not small at all! Much roomier than you would think.
First off the handle is great. Not only you can carry it like the satchel it is named for, but it comes with an adjustable cross body strap with a removable lobster claw and swivel for you to clip on. Crossbody is how I wear my purses so this is a huge bonus to me. I need to be hands free! Read more…
This is not a bag you’ll see us giving away very often, so be sure to enter this giveaway hosted by Crunchy Beach Mama. One lucky person will win a small SoHo Satchel!

Good luck!
Recipe: Crockpot Harvest Crumble
We are blessed to have family members that have multiple apple and pear trees. It means that we end up with bags and baskets full of delicious fruit… but eventually you find yourself needing a way to use it up quickly. And so was born the Harvest Crumble!
Great on its own, but it really sings when topped with whipped cream or ice cream. If I’m feeling particularly indulgent, I will make some cinnamon ice cream to top it… which basically involves blending cinnamon and a touch of sugar with vanilla ice cream. I’m drooling just thinking about it!
Crumble Filling Ingredients:
3 to 5 pounds small apples and pears, cored and quartered (if you really like sweets, use less; if you prefer a more tart dessert, use more)
1/2 to 1 cup of dried cranberries (adjust amount based on preference)
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Crumble Topping Ingredients:
1 cup oats
1 cup loosely packed brown sugar
1/4 cup flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
4 tablespoons butter, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Prep:
Step One- Place apples, pears, and dried cranberries in crockpot (called a slow-cooker in some regions).
Step Two- Mix remaining filling ingredients in a small mixing bowl.
Step Three- Pour sugar mixture into crockpot and stir to coat apples and pears. Level out the apple and pear mixture.
Step Four- Combine topping ingredients in the small mixing bowl. You may find it easiest to use your fingers to break up the butter and blend it evenly with the other ingredients.
Step Five- Sprinkle evenly over apple and pear mixture in the crockpot.
Step Six- Cover and cook on low for about 4 hours.
Step Seven- You could eat it now, but I recommend turning off the crockpot and letting it set (covered) for about an hour. This allows the sauce to thicken some and for the flavors to further develop.
Step Eight- Scoop it out, top it if you wish, and loosen your belt buckle for the second serving!

Tonya is a stay-at-home mom to a precocious two-year-old son that takes every opportunity to steal the spotlight. She’s wife to her romantic knight in mostly-shining armor. They live in Wisconsin in a house ruled by their two crazy cats. Perhaps naming them after goddesses was a bad idea. The family’s obsession with dragons inspired the name of Tonya’s blog… Tyrneathem means “Children of the Dragons.” The cast of characters above are woven through her posts about life, crafts, and whatever else pops into her head.
