Giving Children the Gift of Green

Watching children open their gifts is one of the highlights of the holiday for many people. Shopping for children and imagining their excitement is part of the joy of the season. There are so many options for children’s gifts that it can be quite overwhelming! Whether you have infants, toddlers, or school-aged children on your list, we have some great, green ideas for you!

Gifts for Infants

One item that is always a hit for infants is clothing. Everyone loves to see babies in adorable clothing. Organic clothing is perfect for infants because their skin is so very thin and delicate. Skin absorbs everything put on it so you want to be especially selective with the clothing you put on babies. You can get some great outfits from Kate Quinn Organics or Nosilla Organics. You can get anything from onsies to rompers to pajamas to dresses.

Another item you want to be careful in choosing is teething toys for baby. Selecting natural and safe items for baby’s mouth is vital. Ringley Natural Teething Toys are adorable and they are made from untreated maple and organic cotton terry cloth. The natural untreated maple wood is well-crafted and splinter proof. These teethers are available in straight or knotted terry cloth or adorable animals as well! These not only make great gifts, but are perfect in size for stocking stuffers!

Bedding is a great option, too! Because infants spend so much time sleeping, it is important to surround them with organic, chemical free bedding. It is common knowledge that babies shouldn’t sleep with blankets or pillows so a simple organic crib sheet would make a perfect gift! Bambinoland has organic, Muslin crib sheets that are incredibly soft and comfy for baby! Not only that, but they have some of the best prints on the sheets!

Gifts for Toddlers

Toddlers get so excited about Christmas! This is the age that they really start to understand what Christmas is. Well, maybe they start to understand that they get new toys and that excites them. Regardless, it’s such a joy to watch their excitement.

Imagination is vital at this stage. Toys that encourage imagination are great gifts. Recycled plastic milk jugs made into toys that encourage imagination are genius! Green Toys are just that. The main ingredient in their toys is recycled milk containers and to date they have recycled more than ten million in making their toys!

Imagination isn’t the only thing important at this stage, education is equally important. Toddlers are like sponges and absorb everything so take advantage of that and teach them as much as you can! Begin Again Toys makes that task fun and easy with their Number Snail and Dinosaur and Butterfly A to Z puzzles. These puzzles are made from natural rubber wood and stained with child safe stains.

Toddlers are fairly new to the walking world and need some reliable shoes to get around. Their feet are growing at a fast pace but you still want to put shoes on their feet that will keep their feet protected and healthy. Umi Shoes have some amazing designs and are made with strict guidelines for child-safe materials. They use non-toxic drum-dyed leathers and other environmentally friendly materials. They are also sure to package their shoes in recycled packaging.

Gifts for School-Age Children

Trying to pick the perfect gift for a school-aged child can be rather stressful. Although they are challenging, their gifts can be quite fun! Encouraging imagination, creativity and change are great for this age!

The BFF Bracelet Starter Kit from Shains is a great item for gifting this holiday season. These bracelets are recycled accessories that encourage empower kids to make statements and also allows them to change messages as often as they wish. It’s great for BFFs to do together or even as a mother or father and child project to encourage quality time!

The environment is something that kids need to learn about. It perfect when learning and fun come together as they do in the Thames & Kosmos  Sustainable Earth Kit. This kit gives the child the tools and information to learn firsthand about the problems our environment faces and how we can overcome the problems through sustainable practices and the sensible use of technology.

School-aged children can be rough on their clothes so Christmas time is always a great time to replenish their wardrobe with a few items they may have worn through. Hanna Anderson offers fabulous organic clothing options including underclothes, turtlenecks, pajamas and more! Fun holiday prints make it even more enjoyable to “give green”! The kids will love the bold prints!

Buying green doesn’t have to mean breaking the bank. Each of the above items is available for $60 or less! As you can see, whether you are buying for an infant, toddler or older child there are many, many “green” options. Why not take every chance you can to teach children about the importance of making green choices, including Christmas! Happy Shopping and Happy Holidays!

Customer Spotlight: Roe in New York

Meet Roe!

We want to introduce you to one of our customers. Meet Roe. She lives in Long Island, New York. She’s a diesel mechanic, welder and fabricator! She has quite the collection of Maggie Bags, including three Hobos, a Medium Tote, a Large Tote, two cosmetic bags, a Tote of Many Colors and a Small Clutch. Roe is such an interesting lady! It’s rare to meet a female mechanic (actually, I’ve never met one) and she is a “what you see is what you get” kind of gal.

Roe got her first Maggie Bag a few years ago and fell in love. It made so much sense considering her career path. She had about fifty handbags at the time and ended up donating those to charity and just using Maggie Bags. Here’s some of her collection:

Maggie Bags:  What challenges do you face as a female mechanic in a mostly man’s world?

Roe:  Well, you need a thick skin and have got to be tough. I’ve had a lot of challenges in the past with male bosses. One even said “A woman doesn’t belong in the shop, she belongs in the kitchen.”  There were times I came home from my old job hysterically crying. About six months ago I began working with my boyfriend, Derrick, at a new place and I feel right at home there. He’s been a huge support in my life and I love him so much. I feel like at my new job I’m really able to grow and flourish.

Maggie Bags:  What’s your favorite adult beverage?

Roe: Tequila! Patron. I like it mixed with anything or just shooting it.

Maggie Bags: How many tattoos do you have?

Roe: Not an amount anymore, just total hours!

Maggie Bags: Who inspires you?

Roe: My mom for sure and also my “second mom”, Joan. They’re both fighters. Recently Joan has experienced some health issues and she has just plowed right through it, taking it in stride.

Maggie Bags: Tell us about your dog.

Roe: I have a rescue Pitbull named Felony. I didn’t name her that! She wouldn’t answer to anything else so the name stuck. She’s a big sweetheart in spite of her name.

Maggie Bags: What are some of your favorite places and spaces?

Roe: Wherever I am I’m always listening to the Deftones. I’ve listened to them for fifteen years now and never get bored. I feel at home in my cars €“ I have  a 2005 Volkswagen GTI, a 2006 Volkswagen GTI, and a 1998 Volkswagen Jetta. My favorite place to visit is probably Montauck Point, New York. There’s a lighthouse there and being there just clears my mind.

The Maggie Bags community is filled with women who have passion.  It was so much fun to talk with Roe and learn what she is passionate about.  What a great success story!

Our next spotlight is sure to be just as interesting. Keep reading the blog for the next spotlight.

Give Green: Black Friday Freebies

Giving Green and Saving Green

One of my favorite aspects of couponing is it affords me to be very generous-what I call “giving green.” I’m trying to teach my children that giving during the holidays is equally important to getting. Please consider picking up a few of these to donate to worthy causes. Now, there are freebies nearly every week but never this many at once. Black Friday week is considered the Super Bowl of Freebies!

You will find lots of free goodies in oral hygiene, multivitamins, and hair care at Walgreen’s Black Friday sale, but my favorite store for freebies is CVS. If you’re unfamiliar with how to shop the deals at CVS, check out tutorials from either Coupon Katie or this video from Southern Savers

Personally, I’m excited that CVS is starting the coupon fun well before Black Friday on Sunday, November 18. For a list of all the freebies (yes, there are more than I list below) and links to printables for all the Black Friday deals, go to Southern Savers.

A few tips before you start:

  • The number of items bought represents the limit per card.
  • Couponing trips, especially this big, rarely go as planned, but you have to start with a plan. If they are out of an item, ask for a rain-check.
  • Below you will see several “moneymakers” or MM. Those will help offset whatever tax you will pay. Since I find scenarios most helpful and I will be starting with $12.49 ECBs (like store credit) from previous trips, here’s my plan. Ready?

November 18 - 21 Transaction #1:

Recipe: Creamy Alfredo Shrimp with Kale

I have been on a kale kick lately. My four-year old however is boycotting green vegetables out of the blue, so I have been trying various green veggies in dishes he already loves to try to add a bit more nutrients into his diet. He is eating vegetables but cucumbers, carrots and corn are not enough! (I hope this is a short phase as he has always been a great vegetable eater.) Anyways, I tried a version of my homemade creamy Alfredo shrimp and added kale in the mix. It turned out delicious and he got the added power house green kale too!

Creamy Alfredo Shrimp with Kale

Ingredients

  • 1lb of Pasta (Fettuccine, Orzo or Spaghetti)
  • 1lb of Peeled Devine Shrimp ( I have used both uncooked and cooked)
  • 1 Cup of Parmesan Reggiano or Parmesan Cheese, Shredded
  • 1 Cup of Cream
  • 1/2 Cup of Water
  • 1 Bunch of Kale, Chopped
  • 1 Tablespoon of Olive Oil
  • 1 Clove of Garlic, Minced
  • Salt & Pepper to Taste

Directions

In a large stockpot, bring your water to a rolling boil. Add 1 tablespoon of salt and then cook your pasta al dente. While your water is boiling cook your shrimp, if they are not already. At medium-low heat, add in the olive oil and cook your garlic 3-4 minutes. Add in the cream and water. Simmer and continue to cook until reduced by about half, about 5 minutes. Add about 3/4 cup of cheese to the sauce. Stir and continue to simmer 2-3 minutes. Add your shrimp back into the sauce along with the kale. Toss the kale until just wilted, do your best to not over cook. Remove your sauce from heat and toss with your pasta. Garnish with the remaining cheese and enjoy! Depending on your crowd this should serve 4-6 people. You can also lighten the meal by serving over spaghetti squash in place of the pasta.

Green Printing

Saving on Printing Cost While Being Green

In addition to being into green living and sustainability, I’m also a huge couponer. I wouldn’t qualify to be on “Extreme Couponing,” but I save an average of $6000 a year. To save even more this year, I’m investing in a new printer that will help me go green and save green.

For years, Jenny at Southern Savers has been recommending the Brother HL2240 to print coupons. This laser printer uses far less ink than traditional ink jet printers by printing in black and white, and the coupons reportedly scan better at registers-thus fewer growls by cashiers; that’s huge! The printer comes with a cartridge that should print 700 pages, but you can buy a high yield replacement that will print 2,000. Fewer cartridges are better on the environment and save us time and money. Jenny often posts deals on where to get the best prices on these toner cartridges.

The reason I’m posting this now is the Brother HL2240 printers will hit their rock bottom price during the Black Friday sales: $49.99. They are typically $119.99 at office stores or around $95 on Amazon. You can get this price at either Staples, Office Max, or Office Depot, but I’ll be heading to Staples for a few other deals too. They have a SanDisk 8GB memory card for $4.99, 50 Staples recordable DVDs for $9.99 after rebate, 50 page Staples photo supreme paper FREE after rebate, and Duracell AA or AAA batteries FREE after Staples rewards. They also have several free software deals if you need them. Deals start 11/23/12 at 5:00 a.m. and last until noon or supplies are gone. Bring up to 10 old ink cartridges to recycle and receive $2 per cartridge in Staples rewards.

Ink Refills on the Cheap

If you’re not ready to buy a new printer, you could save on printing another way: refills at Walgreen’s. They will refill any cartridge for $12.99; so invest in the XL version initially and get three times the ink for the same price. I’ve done this for years with my HP all in one printer. Occasionally I would have problems with the color refills but never the black and white.

Finally if you do print coupons, often you will have 1/3 €“ 2/3 of the page blank. Cut these, stack similar sizes, and staple them together to make notepads. Or you could keep a stack handy for your kids to color. For any mistake pages, save and print the back side. And perhaps the biggest savings on printing is deciding what NOT to print. Think twice, print once.

How do you save on printing costs?

You can even break it down into shopping for men during one trip, women on another trip and children on a final trip. Don’t try to do it all in one day, relax and enjoy it! Eco-friendly gift giving is simple, unique and good for our planet! Make a conscious decision to give everyone on your list something that has an eco-friendly twist to it!
