Designer’s Corner: Brief History of the Tote of Many Colors

Editor’s Note: We’re starting something new on the blog today! We’ll have a Designer’s Corner from our lead designer, Konane. She’ll be posting periodically about design, inspiration, fashion and more!

A Brief History on the Tote of Many Colors

When Maggie Bags was still just a twinkle in the eye, the concept for the Tote of Many Colors, TMC for short, was hatching big plans.  Starting with all “seconds” seatbelt webbing and allowing our sewers to randomly choose any colors they wished for the TMC was to be a truly recycled product built to last. We never imagined the TMC would be our most popular bag!

We are proud that much of this original concept has carried through time. We never went through with the total random color selection and sometimes we do have to use first quality seatbelt webbing to achieve your favorite color combinations over and over again. The patchwork concept shines through in the name, Tote of Many Colors. We call it this not only for the play on words but because it comes in so many different color combinations.

Here’s a fun fact for your back pocket: In the naming process we also considered calling our largest and number one selling bag the “Every Bag” and here’s a good one “Technicolor Dream Tote”! We hope you love your Tote of Many Colors as much as we do. Keep your eyes peeled this summer as I am currently working on some great new takes of the TMC coming your way in new colors and patterns!

Kool-Aid Play Dough & Homemade Bath Crayons

Indoor Activities for Kids: Part I

With the weather still too chilly in many areas to let kids adventure and play outdoors, let’s explore some fun indoor DIY projects that will help keep your children busy, learning & having fun!

Kool-Aid Play Dough Recipe

As a sugar filled beverage full of artificial colors and ingredients Kool-Aid certainly isn’t something I’d recommend offering to your children as a beverage, but it definitely makes a fun sensory play dough! This no-cook recipe is super easy to make, and is great for engaging the senses as children enjoy the bright vibrant colors, fun scents, and squish-ability of the dough. Play dough is also an excellent way to strengthen your child’s hand muscles and work on fine motor skills!

Ingredients:

-   1 1/2 cups flour

-   1/4 cup salt

-   1 package unsweetened Kool-Aid mix

-   1 cup boiling water

-   1 1/2 tablespoons oil

Directions:

1.  Mix flour, salt and Kool-Aid in a large bowl.

2.  Add boiling water and oil, then mix with a wooden spoon until a dough ball starts to form.

3.  Once the dough is cool enough to handle knead by hand until you have a nice even color. Hint: Children love helping with the kneading process, it’s a great hand exercise and the warmth of the dough adds additional sensory value!

I repeat the above recipe 6 times to create one batch in each color- Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and Purple. Alternatively, you could make 3 batches in primary colors Red, Yellow and Blue, and do a color mixing activity using Red and Blue dough to make Purple, Yellow and Blue to make Green, and Red & Yellow to make Orange!

Store Kool-Aid Play Dough in air-tight containers, it will keep for about 3 months.

DIY Homemade Bath Crayons

A nice warm bath offers a great opportunity for water play year round, and these natural bath crayons will definitely add to the fun! Budding artists will love drawing on bathtub walls, and you’ll have a nice clean kiddo when they’re done! For added educational value, you can use bath crayons to teach color recognition, drawing shapes, letters and more.

Check out this fun homemade natural bath crayon recipe on Eco-Crazy Mom!

Stay tuned because next week I’ll be providing you even more ideas in Part II of indoor activities for kids!

How do you keep your children busy when it’s too cold to play outdoors? Please leave a comment, we’d love to hear your ideas!

5 Natural Ways To Boost The Immune System and Beat The Common Cold

It’s that time of year again- the time of coughs, sniffles, sneezing, and you guessed it, the common cold. If you’re lucky enough to have everyone in your home healthy, chances are you know at least one person who’s feeling under the weather. Unfortunately, many of us wait until it’s too late to try to heal ourselves. The first thing we need to focus on to beat the common cold (or any illness) is prevention. By boosting our body’s natural immune system, we can give it the strength it needs to beat the common cold, and more!

Here are 5 natural ways to boost the immune system and beat the common cold this year, and ensure your family’s immune system is healthy year round…

1. Vitamin C tops the list of immune boosters. In fact, there have been more studies about the immune boosting effects of Vitamin C than any other nutrient. This super immune booster increases the production of infection fighting white blood cells and antibodies, and increases levels of interferon, the antibody that coats cell surfaces and prevents the entry of viruses. While there are plenty of vitamin C supplements available, research shows eating plenty of vitamin C rich fruits and vegetables is best. You can boost your immune system by consuming 200 mg of vitamin C each day. Citrus fruits, bell peppers, broccoli, tomatoes, strawberries and green leafy vegetables are all great sources of vitamin C to boost your immunity.

2. Echinacea is another great immune booster that’s been shown to decrease one’s odds of developing a cold by 58%. Much like vitamin C, it increases the number of white blood cells and boosts the activity of other immune cells. In fact, in one study researchers found that when echinacea was taken in combination with vitamin C it reduced cold incidence by 86%. Experts recommend taking echinacea daily at the start of the cold season for 1-2 weeks to boost your immunity- it’s not recommended to take for longer than 2 weeks at a time as it becomes ineffective. When choosing echinacea, it is important to be sure that the herb is fresh. Always check expiration dates on supplements, or better yet, buy dried echinacea root and use it in a homemade tincture or tea. If you buy echinacea capsules, be sure that you choose a preparation that is standardized to contain 4% echinacosides, the active ingredient in echinacea. The typical dosage of Echinacea in capsule form is 300 mg 3 times per day. The dosage for standardized tinctures is about 2 to 3 ml per day, and 2 to 3 grams of dried root is considered sufficient.

3. Get plenty of sleep! One of the quickest ways to come down with the symptoms of a cold is to run yourself down with little or broken sleep. According to a study conducted by the Archives of Internal Medicine, quoted by The New York Times, subjects “who slept an average of fewer than seven hours a night €¦ were three times as likely to get sick as those who averaged at least eight hours.” The immune system is made up of several types of cells and proteins that are charged with keeping foreign invaders such as colds or flu at bay. Studies show that when we’re sleep deprived our T-cells go down, and inflammatory cytokines go up- potentially leading to a greater risk of developing a cold or flu. Bottom line: sleep deprivation suppresses the immune system, so make sure everyone in your family is getting their zzz’s!

4. Essential Oils are a powerful way to stimulate the immune system, prevent illness, and cure a large number of ailments. Many of these powerful plant-derived oils have the ability to actually strengthen your cell’s walls so they resist penetration of viruses. Some of my favorite anti-viral, anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, and anti-infectious essential oils are Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree), Melissa Officinalis (Lemon Balm), Clove, Lavender, and Eucalyptus Radiata. There is also an essential oil blend known as “Thieves Oil” that’s packed with a combination of powerful, germ-killing essential oils that eliminate airborne bacteria and boost the immune system. Click here for tips on using and applying essential oils. You can also add several drops of any of the above essential oils to a spray bottle filled with water and use it to disinfect counter tops, toys, doorknobs, and more. I could easily write pages about the many benefits of various essential oils and how they promote wellness, but we’ll have to save that information for another day. In the mean time, I encourage you to do some research of your own- I’m certain you’ll be impressed with what you find!۬

5. Natural Antioxidants such as vitamin E, carotenoids, bioflavonoids, selenium and zinc are all super immune boosters that can help prevent illness and keep your family healthy. Antioxidants are an important part of building a strong immune system because they protect cells from oxidative damage by free radicals, the byproducts of metabolism, and environmental factors. Vitamin E signals the release of natural killer cells, which are cells that seek and destroy foreign particles such as germs and toxins. It also stimulates the production of B cells, or immune cells that manufacture antibodies. Eating a diet rich in nuts, seeds, vegetable oils, whole grains, leafy greens and fortified breakfast cereals will help you meet your daily vitamin E needs. Beta carotene is converted to vitamin A only when the body needs it. This process allows the remaining carotenoids to act as antioxidants, fighting free radicals throughout the body. Brightly colored fruits and vegetables such as carrots, apricots, sweet potatoes, squash, broccoli, tomatoes, cantaloupe, peaches, spinach, kale, pumpkin and mango are all good sources of beta carotene. Bioflavonoids aid the immune system by protecting the body’s cells against environmental pollutants. These beneficial polynutrients can be found in found in legumes, soybeans, tea, grapes, red wine and soy products. Selenium is an important mineral and antioxidant that increases the effectiveness of vitamin E while boosting the immune system’s reaction to infections. To meet your daily selenium needs be sure to consume healthful foods such as tuna, lobster, shrimp, snapper, whole grains, eggs, chicken, cheese, garlic, nuts, seeds and vegetables. Another mineral and immune booster, zinc increases white blood cell and killer cell production. This enhances the immune system’s ability to fight infection more aggressively and release antibodies. Foods rich in zinc include oysters, crabs, beef, turkey, beans and fortified cereals.۬ ۬By making a conscious effort to strengthen your family’s immune system through a healthy diet, plenty of rest, and using natural herbs and essential oils you can significantly increase your odds of beating the common cold this season- and if someone in your family does get sick you can be confident they’ll have a strong immune system ready to fight it! Wishing you & your family the best in health & wellness!۬

Recipe Review: Brown Sugar Garlic Baked Chicken

One night last week I had some chicken breasts thawed out and was trying to figure out dinner. I posted a question online to my friends asking if they have any recipe recommendations. One of my friends came back recommending Easy Garlic Chicken. It seemed like a super-easy recipe but I wondered if it would actually taste good. To my surprise, it was heavenly! I had three breasts so I had to change the proportions a bit. Plus I used lemon-infused olive oil from my recent purchase at The Tree and the Vine rather than the standard EVOO.

Ingredients

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

4 garlic cloves, minced (I used a garlic press)

4 tablespoons brown sugar

3 tablespoons olive oil (I used lemon-infused)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 500°F and spray a casserole dish with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. In a sauté pan, sauté garlic until tender using the olive oil.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in the brown sugar.
  4. Place chicken breasts in the casserole dish. Lightly salt and pepper on each side.
  5. Pour mixture from sauté pan over the chicken breasts and bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes.

I have never cooked anything on 500°F and I expected the chicken to turn out dry. Instead it had a wonderful flavor and had a little bit of a baked glaze on it. Here’s how mine turned out:

I am definitely adding this recipe to my repertoire of standards! It was so easy and my husband loved it (he ate TWO chicken breasts!) What are your go-to recipes?

Too Cold Outside? Winter Fun Inside!

Winter is in full swing and the little ones would love to get outside and play, but it’s just too cold in most places! Chilly temperatures limit everything, including going out for dinner and shopping! As the temperatures fall, there are challenges that come with finding indoor activities to keep the kids occupied.

Let it Snow€¦Inside!

There are so many fun winter craft ideas available online to help keep little ones happy! Do you remember making snowflakes as kids? That’s right, the paper ones! If you are craft-challenged or just want to keep things clean and in order, this is an easy to do project and the kids really have so much fun! Just get out some paper and kid-friendly scissors and decorate, decorate, decorate! Simply fold the paper and let the kids cut shapes and designs on the paper. Once they open their creation they will have a beautiful surprise created just by them! Wait until you see their eyes light up, it will be priceless!

If you want to take it a step further with the snowflake décor, there’s a GREAT idea on Pinterest that we will be trying in the coming months! Puffy snowflakes will allow your little ones to experiment with texture while having loads of fun! Simply use cardstock paper, salt and flour and let the kids design their own snowflakes! Food coloring can also be added, although with these being snowflakes you really don’t need it! You can quickly and safely dry them in the microwave, too!

Cold Winter Feet Turned Penguin? Oh the Fun!

Outside of snowflakes, another fun sign of winter is penguins! Did you know you can make penguins with your feet? That’s right! Imagine the fun your little ones will have with this! Simply trace their footprints on either black construction or cardstock paper, and decorate until their heart’s content! You can use construction paper or even fleece for cut out hats and scarves, eye beads, pom pom for ear muffs, or anything you and your little ones can imagine! Paint also makes great penguins on any color of paper! Simply put black paint on the children’s feet and let them step on paper to make many pieces of art. Penguin feet make great art projects for scrapbooks to remember just how little those feet were, keepsakes for grandparents, or you can get really creative make it into a family keepsake

When hanging your new family keepsake of penguin feet, you may notice there isn’t much sunlight coming through the windows. Winter can be pretty dreary and without the bright summer sun daily, the windows can use some cheering up! Upcycle the leftover tissue paper from the holidays and let your children make winter window collages that will brighten your windows! All you need for this quick and easy craft is some contact paper, tissue paper and glitter! You can add in any other materials to make it fun and cheery, too! The contact paper can be layed sticky side up to decorate and then covered with another sheet of contact paper, sticky side down to complete. Mom and the kids can then cut into shapes and decorate windows all around your home for some winter brightness!

Don’t let the cold of winter bring winter blues into your home! There are lots of crafts waiting to be done with the kids. Creative juices will flow and the kids will forget all about not being able to play outside!

Customer Spotlight: Juanice in Georgia

Meet Juanice!

We want to introduce you to one of our customers. Meet Juanice! She lives in Georgia and is the owner of a coffee roasting business, Java Genesis Coffee Roasting. She recently purchased the Large Tote in camo and a Tote of Many Colors in chocolate.

Maggie Bags: Where is the last place your Maggie Bag went?
Juanice: Customer deliveries. I actually carry the coffee in my Maggie Bag!

Maggie Bags: Tell us about your business.
Juanice: My husband and I discovered fresh roasted coffee 15 years ago. We had been driving into downtown Atlanta to buy it because fresh roasted tastes so much better. Then my husband discovered we could roast coffee at home on home roasting machine. We started giving away samples to friends and family and before long we thought “we should start a business!” About a year ago, we decided to pursue our dreams and started Java Genesis.

Maggie Bags: How did you come up with the name?
Juanice: Funny story€¦ we drank a lot of beer one night and just made up the name. Java for coffee and Genesis because we’re creating fresh roasted coffee from these green coffee beans. My favorite is the Costa Rica La Amistad. We also sell at the local farmer’s market.

Maggie Bags: What are your favorite non-work pastimes?
Juanice: Cycling. Although this new business has left me little time for it! In Puerto Rico every January there’s a 3-day ride, 375 miles, and you ride around the entire island. We’ve done it once and would love to train again for it.

Maggie Bags: Everyday uniform?
Juanice: Usually have on sweatshirt with Java Genesis logo, jeans and hiking boots.

Maggie Bags: Who inspires you?
Juanice: My dad. He’s 73 and always learning and always looking for new challenges. I really admire that about him and I hope to have those same type of traits.

Maggie Bags:
Little known fact about you?
Juanice: I was a competitive gymnast when I was eight. I grew up in Florida and competed in the Junior Olympics for State of Florida.

Maggie Bags: How do you unwind?
Juanice: We have a favorite bar that carries 100+ kinds of beer. We like to stop in and see what the latest one is. I enjoy talking with the bartenders because they are the same way about beer as I am about coffee.

Maggie Bags: Next stop?
Juanice: I’m very excited to see what 2013 holds.  Looking forward to meeting finding awesome new coffees to roast, meeting new customers and getting back on my bike!

Check out all of the customer spotlight features. Our next spotlight is sure to be just as interesting so keep up with the Maggie Bags’s blog!

Tracking Your Green: How you CAN Afford Organic

The most common excuse for not “shopping green” is money. There’s no denying that buying organic produce and natural foods usually costs more, but I have found the key to buying what I want is simply tracking my spending. When I am mindful of saving money in one area of my budget, it frees up that extra $10-$20 to pay for quality foods. This year I’m going to stay under budget and you will too!

First, you don’t know if you can afford spending a little extra if you don’t know what you spend on groceries. You laugh, but that was me four years ago-not having a clue which prices were good or how much I spent on food in a given month. In 2010, I challenged myself on my blog to start tracking every dime I spent at grocery stores, pharmacies, craft stores, clothing retailers, big box stores, and restaurants. This wasn’t a comprehensive budget, but these were the expenses I could control and change as needed.

With a spiral notebook and a calculator, I kept at it for a year. I learned some months I exceeded my budget while others I came in under. Seeing the savings column add up was a key motivator to keep couponing. Over the course of 12 months, I stayed under budget and saved $6600 (41% by pairing coupons with sales). The best part was that being mindful of the numbers made me feel powerful!

In 2011, I graduated to a basic Excel spreadsheet that calculated the savings percentages and totals for me. I could also easily sort by category to see what I was spending where. However, once I was no longer blogging about my budget, I wasn’t as diligent sticking to it. Even though I was continuing the same spending and saving habits as 2010, the numbers didn’t lie. Being less mindful of the totals resulted in higher spending. It gets worse. In 2012 I abandoned my budget tracking completely because “I was so busy.”

Well, it’s a new year and time to get back on track. For inspiration, I suggest you download Dave Ramsey’s FREE Guide to Budgeting. I consulted my friends on Facebook for how they tracked expenses, and their methods ranged from pen and paper to Quicken. Two new tools to me were Mint (free online budgeting software) and an app called PocketMoney. Having PocketMoney ($4.99) on her iPhone allows my friend Kristin to update purchases on the go almost instantly. These sound good, but they don’t let me track my savings too.

So my husband has built me a customized Excel spreadsheet with a few extras than before; that, ladies, is love. If you would like the template, email Maggie Bags at marketing@maggiebags.net. I’ll keep all my receipts in one pocket of my Maggie Bag and will update my totals every Sunday night. I will also share how I’m doing periodically with you to keep myself accountable. Once recorded, receipts will go into a Ziploc for three months and will then be shredded. Unless a purchase requires an exchange, return, rebate, or warranty, receipts are just clutter.

Meanwhile, I’ll be looking for every opportunity to afford organic foods. Primarily I wait for sales, print coupons from Mambo Sprouts and occasionally Coupons.com, and contact favorite companies to send me coupons directly. Another technique is buying marked down produce, meat, and dairy near their expiration date. If you plan to freeze, cook, or consume the goods within the date, you can often pick up organic at half price.

Most grocery stores now have their own generic organic line of foods if you hate waiting for sales. Kroger’s organic line is Simple Truth, and they have coupons too. You can either load e-savers directly onto your loyalty card from that site or call customer service to have them mail you their organic coupons. The other day I paid the same price for a whole organic chicken as a conventional chicken by combining a coupon with a sale. Earth Fare also has a brand new loyalty program called Tomato Bank; sign up now and earn $10 off your next visit. They also have great weekly freebies by email and coupons you can print from their website.

So who’s ready to make shopping green and staying on budget one of their new year’s resolutions?

Christmas Cards: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

It’s that time of year when Christmas cards are pouring into our mailboxes and we get see how everyone has changed in the past 365 days. Sadly, every year more than 2 billion cards are mailed in just the U.S.-wiping out 300,000 trees. From the paper to the gas used to transport them, all the resources involved in delivering those cards makes me cringe. To ease my mind a bit, I have found ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle them.

REDUCE: I do have some friends who send E-cards instead. Often they cost nothing and create no waste. Blue Mountain allows you to send talking cards in a number of different accents and the sentiments run the gamut. You can send them through email or post to Facebook. Find a reason to send an E-card all year with the variety from 123 Greetings. I’m proud of my alma mater Davidson College for sending video E-cards in an effort to save money and resources.

But I have to admit-I still love tangible cards. I like seeing each person’s creativity in designs, reading highlights from their lives, and checking out their favorite photographs. This year I chose to send cards through Cardstore and saved 70%; however, really I saved even more because they mailed the cards directly to everyone on my list. Some designs even cost less than the stamp! This saved me money, time, effort, and gas to and from the post office.

REUSE: The first thing I will do with all those fabulous pictures from Christmas cards is this idea from Under the Sycamore’s blog: snap pictures of the photographs to add next to my contacts in my smart phone; genius! Then I’ll cut them up to create a collage that hangs in my kitchen. I bought a simple 22 x 16 cork board years ago and each year I cover it with the faces of my friends and family. It’s a non-cluttered step above hiding under magnets on the refrigerator.

Here are ten creative ways to reuse cardstock including ornaments and puzzles. I cut up my kids’ paintings from the art easel and glue them to cardstock to make our own cards.  Squidoo has ideas and instructions for making boxes and other containers out of cards.  Consider donating them to teachers or senior care facilities to use in their crafts.

RECYCLE: Whatever scraps of paper are left get recycled. We take a carload of recyclables twice a month only when we’re already out on another errand. If you prefer curbside pick-up, consider joining Recyclebank. Membership is free and recycling earns you points towards great discounts from companies like Kashi. You can also take online quizzes to earn extra points.

Even better is buying cards made from recycled paper. Green Promise has a long list of companies offering eco-friendly options. Cards for Causes takes it a step further and lets you choose a charity to donate 20% of your sale. That’s really neat.

Now I want your feedback. Which was your favorite idea?
