Try Hypermiling as you Drive Along

Pinterest

I discovered the term ‘hypermiling’ a few years ago. I am very conscious on how I drive and watch my gas tank to see how I’m doing. I’m even at the point where when I’m driving with other people and they are doing it ‘wrong’ I inwardly cringe. ha! It has really become a game. How many miles can I go on a tank of gas? Hypermiling, defined by Urban Dictionary - method(s) of increasing your car’s gas mileage by making skillful and simple changes to your car parts and the way you drive it. You can save up to 30% with these simple steps to remember while driving along.

Go the speed limit. Especially on the highway. Once you are driving over 60mph your fuel intake skyrockets.

Coast instead of breaking. As soon as you see a stoplight ahead turn yellow or is red, immediately take your foot off the petal. Try not to have to get to a complete stop.

Plan ahead to determine what traffic lights are coming up and change speed accordingly. Breaking actually costs you money. Take off slowly from a full stop. It’s not a race from the start position. Just this one adjustment will have dramatic effects on your gas mileage!

Cruise Control. Always use on long flat stretches of road. Give your foot a break!

Lightening the Load. Do not keep heavy items in your car. Take out extra sports equipment, beach chairs, anything you don’t use on a daily basis. I know someone who took out all of her car mats when she went on a road trip!

Don’t leave the car running. For every two minutes a car is idling, it uses the same amount of fuel it takes to go about one mile. If the car will be in idle for more than 10 seconds turn it off!

Pull through the parking space so you are facing out. This is a funny one, but it takes less gas just to drive forward when leaving then to back out. Actually more safe too because you can see better!

Check Tire Pressure. Every month. Under-inflated tires are responsible for nearly 3.3 million gallons of wasted gasoline everyday. Now if I could only get Hubby to drive as well as I do then we’d be all set. :)

Do you think you will give these tips a try and become a hypermiler yourself?

My car has a manual transmission and I wish more people would buy one. Not only does it get better fuel consumption, there is no temptation to text or talk on the phone while driving. I think that would be a good solution when someone is caught driving while distracted - they have to trade their vehicle for a manual for a length of time commensurate with the infraction. The city will need a fleet of such vehicles. I haven’t thought this through completely; the city would need some compensation.

It has been so long since I’ve driven a manual transmission but you are totally right! I have almost forgotten them.

I like manual transmissions because they don’t seem to wear out so easily either.

I do the cruise control and the coasting instead of braking. I also don’t idle - doing this is also eco-friendly!

Forgot to add - I also try to plan my route ahead of time so that I’m making mostly right-hand turns

      great idea!

my tires ALWAYS lost their air pressure- it was due to a faulty switch. It cost a lot of money to replace but I bet now we’re actually saving money on gas. And I always look for “pull thrus” when I park! :) Great tips!
