We called my great-grandmother Granny. She died when I was very young but I remember her as being a strong woman who loved the most intense and arduous forms of cooking and sewing. She was born in West Tennessee in a very rural area. She survived breast cancer (double mastectomy), uterine cancer, and helped form a women's civic club to help rural women further their education and understanding of community, social and world issues.
