All-Natural Face Paint
Halloween is just around the corner and the kids are all excited! Everyone is talking about what costumes the kids will chose, what candy they will pass out and what decorations they’ll hang. Why not add in some great, simple ideas to make your Halloween as eek-o-friendly as possible? It’s far easier than you could ever imagine!
When it comes to costumes, being “green” is incredibly easy! Not only is it easy, but its fun to set up a costume swap with a local parenting group. You can trade costumes with other families whose children have outgrown them from previous years. By doing this you are not only saving money but you are saving costumes from ending up in the landfill.
Everyone needs a treat bag for Trick-or-Treating, right? Be creative and instead of using a plastic bag, go for an old purse, a flower pot, a backpack, a pillow case or even a lunch box! The possibilities are endless of things you can use from around the house!
Now that you’ve gotten your “new” costume and treat bag, could you use a little face paint to go with your costume (or your child’s)? Making natural face paint keeps unwanted chemicals away from your face and your child’s face and it is easy and fun! Here’s the recipe:
Ingredients:
1 tsp cornstarch
1 ½ tsp all-natural
diaper rash cream
1-2 drops of natural/organic food coloring
½ - 1 tsp water (depending on desired consistency)
Once you’ve gathered the ingredients mix the cornstarch, diaper cream and food coloring into a small bowl. Only if necessary, add water to create the desired consistency. Simple and safe, what more could we ask for in a face paint?
Recycling Candy Wrappers
Another fun “green” thing to do around Halloween is to plan
a recycle craft party with the kids! Do you know how many things you can make
with recycled candy wrappers? You can search for many things online or even on Pinterest, but some simple things to make
from used candy wrappers would be picture frames, bracelets, purses and unique
pieces of art!
Not feeling crafty? You can also send certain candy wrappers in to Terracycle where they can be upcycled into something useful instead of being thrown away! Terracycle will even pay for your shipping!
Many people host parties around Halloween. If you host a party, make a pledge to avoid using disposables like napkins, paper plates, cups or tablecloths. Sure, it may be a bit more work after the party is over, but it’s worth it in the long run to keep these items from the landfill. If you are attending a party, reach out to the hostess and offer to help him or her avoid using these items.
These and so many other small changes can make a big difference. See how eerily easy it is to be green on Halloween?
